Formation of the Association

The Oman Dermatology Society (ODS) was established in Muscat in 2006, as a national body for dermatology. This was within the main tertiary care centre of Al Nahdha Hospital where the Department of Dermatology was first established in 1972.

ODS was initiated to address dermatological resources in healthcare services for diagnosis and management of common skin diseases in Oman. The society was conceptualized to gather all dermatologists and venereologists to share and discuss the clinical practice, education and research relevant in dermatologic medicine, surgery and related discipline.

Oman Dermatology Society is affiliated to Oman Medical Association and is under the patronage of Ministry of Social Development. The Society’s aim is to cater the academic needs of all the dermatologists in the Ministry of Health, Government and private sectors. Members are encouraged to conduct research and studies inclined in the field of specialization.

The Dermatology Department in Al Nahdha Hospital is also a teaching faculty for undergraduate students from Sultan Qaboos University as well as a centre for post-graduates from Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) which is affiliated to the Arab Board of Medical Specialization in Dermatology, Syria. In addition to dermatology residents, it is also involved in training OMSB Residents from other departments like Internal Medicine, Emergency, Paediatric and Family Medicine. It also arranges short clinical training for General Practitioners from Health Centers.

  • To represent and maintain contact among dermatologists in Oman and neighbouring countries.
  • To participate nationally and internationally in scientific advancement in the field of Dermatology.
  • To conduct studies and researches in the field of Dermatology.
  • To encourage the advancement of education and clinical training.
  • To organize scientific meetings and specialized symposiums in order to share clinical experience and scientific advances in the field. In addition to offer social gathering among dermatologists and supporting staff.
  • To facilitate the exchange of scientific research results and ideas of the Association’s interest with other scientific institutions in Oman and abroad.
  • To prepare and organize intensive scientific courses for the trainee doctors in the field of dermatology in order to groom them, academically and practically for Board examination.
  • To enhance national and regional cooperation between dermatologists and other related specialties in promoting improvement of patient care.
  • To raise fund in order to organise dermatological meetings, symposiums and conferences for the improvement of education and clinical research.
